Space Foundation Discovery Center

Last weekend our Navigators took a trip to the Space Foundation Discovery Center to work on our Space Badges.

We first went to learn through a Science on a Sphere presentation with Wendy Perelstein Lead Docent/Travis Schenck.

We saw the planets come to life on this giant sphere and learned about constellations and how to find the north star.

Then we got a chance to build junk rockets.   We were given water bottles and boxes of potential rocket making supplies.

All the Navigators selected supplies and got to work.

We had a blast making these cool rockets!

After rocket making we even got a chance to explore all the exhibits in the facility.  We learned and ton and had so much fun!
Thank you Space Foundation Discovery Center!

Our First Hike

We finally got a chance to go on our first hike.
We talked about what materials you need on a hike, learned to use our maps and compasses...

and hit the trail!

Of course we stopped to take in some sights.

Unfortunately it was cut a little short by rain, but we still had a great time!

Geocaching

Last weekend the Navigators learned all about geocaching.
We had two special guests, Deb and Keith, from our local geocaching club.

They who explained all about geocaching.

We checked out he types of containers used.

And how the GPS unit works.

Then the Juniors headed out to find their first cache!

This one was hidden in a log.

We tried to find a few more, but weren't so lucky.

Meanwhile our Seniors were learning how GPS satellites work.

Then, they found a few caches together.

What a fun learning experience!
Thank you so much Deb and Keith.

Water Wonders Meeting

The wonderful people at Colorado Springs Utilities set up an awesome scouting program to learn more about water conservation.  This was a combined program for Navigators, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

We all met in the classroom and first learned about how water travels.  We did a little roll playing and became water droplets.  We rolled dice to see where we would travel.  We visited stations around the room representing different places you may find water, ground water, rivers, clouds etc.

The Juniors were most fascinated by this amazing water table.  It had running water that showed how it travels from the mountains and into our city .

Then, we headed outside for a tour of local plant life in the xeriscape garden.

We got to smell, and touch and explore.

Then we did a super fun water relay race!

It was a tie!

While Juniors returned inside to learn all about the water cycle, our Seniors took a trip outside to learn about water purification.

We even purified some very questionable water and gave it a taste!

We learned a ton and had a blast!
